Quilt Prep

How you can help speed up the longarm quilting process...

  1. Press both the quilt top and back, and mark the top edges of both with safety pins (important for directional fabric).

  2. Clip any and all loose threads on both sides (loose threads and or pet hair can show through the quilt if not removed).

  3. Ensure your backing is at least 8" longer and wider (i.e. 4" wider on all four sides). I highly recommend if you are using 108" wide backing, to prewash it (even if you don't prewash your other fabrics, don't worry, I don't either). The extra wide 108' backings typically have a lower thread count and fewer threads per square inch, and are known to shrink sometimes as much as an inch per yard. Best to play it safe and prewash so it doesn't affect the look of your quilt after it is quilted and washed.  But, if you prefer the crinkled look of quilts like, then don't prewash and expect a more dramatic result.

  4. Square up and press your backing fabric, especially if it’s a 108” wide backing, as these will often have large creases in them from being stored on the bolt.

  5. If piecing your backing, please use at least a 1/2" seam allowance. If possible, have your seam run horizontally on the back, this creates less bulk on the frame. Press seam open or towards the bottom of the quilt as this helps it roll better on and off the frame.

  6. In the case you are providing your own batting, please ensure it is at least 6" wider and 6" longer than your quilt top.

  7. If you are mailing your quilt to us, we highly recommend enclosing your quilt in a plastic bag so it stays dry and does not get damaged during travel. We will also send your finished quilt back to you in a sealed plastic bag within a box to make sure it is kept safe during travel.

-- Please note, if your quilt top or backing need to be pressed or threads trimmed when we receive it, we do charge a $20/hr. prepping fee. We want to finish and return your quilt back to you as soon as possible, so everything you do

to make sure it's ready to go, will truly help us keep our turn around window quicker and your costs down.
